FAQ

  • Where do we meet?
    • There are two Singles New Beginnings groups.  One group meets every Wednesday from noon until 2:00 PM at Laurel Manor Rec Center, usually meeting in the Washington or Jefferson room.    The other SNB group meets every Monday in the large "card room" at Fenney Recreation Center from 10 until 12.  You are welcome to come to either of those groups.
  • What do we do at the meetings?
    • Every week, prior to class, we discuss a new chapter from the book "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron. Although this book was originally written to speak to artists, writers and other creative professions, it has been adapted as a tool to help everyone achieve their goals. We come to class having read the appropriate chapter and during the first half of class we discuss the main points of the chapter and anything that spoke to us personally.  The purpose of the readings and the discussion is to help us set and achieve personal or professional goals to become our best selves.  We spend the second half of the class doing an activity related to personal growth as a senior single.  Sometimes these activities are writing and/or discussion and sometimes they are activities within a small group.  Its focus is not on sports or games, but rather a weekly discussion on personal growth (becoming our best self) and relationship building.
  • Is the meeting about dating or trying to find a partner?
    • Yes and no.  All of the people in the class are unmarried. Some have never been married, some are widowed and others are divorced.  The topics that we cover help process grief and loss, and goal-setting to become our best single selves; both for our own benefit and potentially for a future partner. So while the class does not focus specifically on dating and finding a partner, through facilitated conversation and discussion, participants often form meaningful and deep friendships; and maybe meet a very special someone quickly and easily.
  • Why might this class interest me?
    • If you are unmarried and are looking for kind, supportive, positive friends who want to help one another become their best selves through goal-setting, positive reinforcement and being kind to ourselves and one another, this group is for you.  While surrounded by kind, supportive friends, "The Artist's Way" book uses tools to help us move through blocks to our own creativity and personal growth to create our best path forward.
  • Who can attend?
    • Any Village resident who is unmarried. Many of our attendees are windowed and others are divorced and once in a while someone comes who has never been married.  If you are separated from your spouse, but not divorced, you are considered to be married.
  • What should I bring to class?
    • Bring something to write with and a notebook.  Many people also bring a folder to hold the many handouts we are given.  If you enjoy the class and choose to keep attending, you may want your own copy of the book "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron, which is available for purchase at most online book sellers.
  • Most class sessions have been averaging around 20 participants.  This small size gives everyone a chance to speak.  Also with the small size, it's usually very easy to hear and communicate.  Many people come early and stay late, continuing the discussions or just chatting with friends.
  • This class is attractive to people with a personal growth mindset, instilled with the belief that our life can be enriched and our relationships can be developed through effort, self-exploration, learning, listening and persistance.
